After all the studies and revelations about the shortcomings of his personal life and his presidency, what so vividly endures about President John F. Kennedy’s public legacy is his idealistic call to service, especially to the nation's youth. It was an eloquent plea to all of us to give something back, to make this a better society, and it explains many of the better impulses of the 1960s: “And so my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”
