Following the Civil War, many children in the United States
were deprived of an education and put to work under
dangerous conditions in mines, cotton mills factories
farms and other industries in most states, children were
considered the property of their parents and the practice
of sending children to work was legal and generally
accepted as a parental decision
in this 1905 speech activist Florence Kelley addresses the
National American Woman Suffrage Association in
Philadelphia When she was a young girt Kelley's father,
US congressman and abolitionist William Darrah Kelley
(1814-1890) had taken her to factories to see the plight of
young children working under dangerous conditions in her
speech Kelly links women's suffrage with child labor.
