Across the entire range of the cane toad population there is variation in the length and muscle development of adult toad legs. When populations are dense, for example in the middle of the range, leg length is not related to survival or reproduction and each new generation has a similar variation in leg length. On the edge of the range individuals with longer and stronger legs are more likely to move further and find new resources that those with shorter legs. In these edge populations offspring are more likely to show longer legs than the average in the middle.
