INDICATION FOR SURGERY: This 27-year-old male, who was in a motor vehicle accident just prior to arrival, suffered a head injury.
PROCEDURE: Right frontal burr hole placement of ventriculostomy.
OPERATION: After shaving the frontal scalp, the area was prepped and draped. A curvilinear posterolateral concave incision was made in the right frontal scalp, exposing the periosteum. A twist drill burr hole was placed in the right frontal skull. The dura was then opened with a blade knife, as was the pia. A ventricular catheter was placed, and there was good flow of cerebrospinal fluid. This helped relieve the brain edema. A catheter was tunneled out. The scalp was then stitched up, and a sterile dressing was applied. The patent was returning was returned to the recovery room in good condition.
