Many kids today have one gaming system-if not more-that allows them to play video games online. Gamers want to play online games all the time. They want to spend hours in worlds that are not real. Online gaming is wasted time. Parents and other adults should work to limit the time that kids spend gaming.   2 Kids should not be allowed to play video games as much as they want for three reasons. First, when kids spend too much time online playing games, they do not develop vital social skills that allow them to interact with others. Second, too much gaming results in inactivity that in turn leads to weight gain, childhood diabetes, and other health problems. Finally, gaming takes up time that kids should be spending doing things that are more stimulating and productive, like reading or doing homework.   3 Playing online games creates problems with kids' relationships with others. When they do not know how to interact with others, kids can lose friends. Their relationships with family members can suffer as well. Gaming all the time does not allow kids to learn social skills that they need in the real world. While it is true that gamers sometimes play in teams online, these games are not reality. Developing social skills requires kids to practice face-to-face communication skills. Gaming online does not allow them this practice.   4Our nation's youth are becoming overweight. One reason may be that many of them sit around playing video games all day. Kids should spend more time playing outside, whether it’s swimming, skateboarding, hiking, or participating in sports. When kids play online video games, the only things they exercise are their hands on the control pads. Gamers often stay in their rooms either sitting at computers or lying on their bed playing on computers for hours. They have few chances to exercise and metabolize calories that they get from their food. The result is weight gain and the development of unhealthy practices that might be carried over into adulthood. Playing video games can lead to health problems linked with obesity like diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.   5When kids spend too much time gaming, they waste valuable time that could be used in ways that stimulate their minds, make them more knowledgeable about the world around them, and prepare them to succeed later in life. Gaming takes away time they could be spending on schoolwork and their grades can suffer. When given a choice, many kids would much rather play video games than finish homework. Playing video games then leads to students dropping out of school.    6Too much gaming can lead to problems for kids. They lose the chance to build good social skills. They develop unhealthy lifestyles. They lose time that would be better used to develop their young minds. Many kids do not have the maturity, experience or knowledge to decide what is best for themselves. Thus, it is up to us parents to place strict limits on the amount of time our kids spend playing online video games.  2. Which sentence from the passage does NOT support the author's claim that kids spend too much time playing online video games? “Gaming all the time does not allow kids to learn social skills that they need in the real world.” “Our nation’s youth are becoming overweight. One reason may be that many of them sit around playing video games all day.” “Many kids today have one gaming system-if not more-that allows them to play video games online.” “When kids spend too much time gaming, they waste valuable time that could be used in ways that simulate their minds…”
