The House of Burgesses
In 1619, the Virginia Company agreed to create a legislative assembly. This
became the House of Burgesses, the first legislative assembly in the American
colonies. Its first meeting brought together 22 elected representatives in
Jamestown on July 30, 1619. Members met at least once a year with the royal
governor.
