A patient is rushed to the ER by ambulance with symptoms of high fever, hypotension, full-body tight red rash, peeling of skin at palms and soles, and is near comatose. She is currently menstruating. Stat blood samples are drawn from central line and periphery. Lab results are called back in 20 minutes stating they found gram-positive cocci in clusters. Explain to your groups & TA what this means, what it means in terms of helping the patient, and how the testing works.
