Read the attached article that gives a brief overview of Black History Month and answer the questions below. All assignments will be submitted on Schoology. If you want to write on paper and submit a photo, that is fine. The purposes of this assignment are cultural awareness, reading comprehension, practicing digestion of a news source, and gaining more context for U.S. History as a course. By completing this assignment, you will gain a basic understanding of the WHAT and WHY of Black History Month and become a more effective reader of a news source. Questions (should be answered in COMPLETE sentences): 1. What news source is the article from? What is the full date (month, day, year)? Who is the author? 2. Examine the photos at the top of the article. What do you notice about the people, surroundings, and signs? What are they doing? What era was this in? (Think after slavery but before the Civil Rights Act of 1964) 3. Who does the article refer to as the "father of black history?" 4. What year did Woodson first set out to start a celebration for BHM? Approximately what time period did it become a more common celebration? 5. What did the professor from Texas A & M say Woodson's goal was? Which prominent abolitionist leader was born in February? 8. Name the first black president and first lady of the United States These questions are not directly from the article. Make sure to link a source if you look elsewhere online to answer them, although I encourage you to use your own thoughts. 9. Have you been involved in a BHM celebration before?
