One of the way it can affect the global temperature is through eccentricity. The path of the earth's orbit changes every 96,000 years from an almost perfect circle to an ellipse. As this happens, it means some part (e.G. Northern hemisphere) of the earth will be more away from the sun and thus will receive less energy/insolation. This receiving of less heat energy can decrease the global temperature. It can even lead to the buildup of an ice age.
