The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!-that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
-Edgar Allan Poe, from "Annabel Lee
Poe's "Annabel Lee" could also be said to be an allegorical poem in which the
events are supposed to be interpreted as symbolically and emotionally
meaningful rather than actually true. How could this passage be used as
evidence that the poem uses allegory?
