PARTICLE NATURE OF MATTER PART 2 EXPERIMENT 1A: TO EXAMINE HOW A SOLID BEHAVES IN A SOLVENT
APPARATUS: 250 cm³ flask, 4 test tubes, white paper, potassium permanganate
a) Half-fill the flask with water and drop into it three crystals of potassium Permanganate . swirl the flask gently until the crystal dissolve.
b)Fill two clean test tubes with some of the liquid from the flask and view their contents against a sheet of white paper.
c) Add water to the flask until it is almost full. Swirl the solution for a short time and repeat exercise (b) above, using another set of test tubes.
POINTS FOR DISCUSSION: (i)
i) Did the potassium permanganate spread
evenly through the water?
ii) In the second experiment, when the solution was diluted, did the potassium permanganate spread evenly again?
iii) Give an explanation of your observation in the term of the particle nature of both the water and the potassium permangate
