Homes on the open prairies were often built of "sod," although it should be noted that in some locations here they were built with "wood", since wood was more common in many of the wooded areas.
Homes on the open prairies were often build of sod. If the prairie lacked standard building materials such as stone or wood, sod from thickly-rooted prairie grass was used for construction as it was abundant, so that there were many sod houses, also know as soddy in which cut patches of sod in rectangles were piled into walls.
