The body produces catalase, an enzyme that decomposes hydrogen peroxide before it can create hydroxyl radicals, to protect itself.

Catalases are ubiquitous enzymes that degrade hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen (2H₂O₂= 2 H₂O + O₂) with great efficiency, preventing cell oxidative damage.

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is unique among general poisons in that it is stable in abiotic settings at room temperature and pH, but kills any form of cell quickly by creating extremely reactive hydroxyl radicals.
