It is correct that Dr Faustus does not truly understand Christianity, but that is not why this is a pivotal moment. This is a pivotal moment in Doctor Faustus because it shows that Faustus learns that death is inevitable. In his opinion, Christianity can only promise death since Bible says we are all sinners and the reward of sin is death, then we must all die an everlasting death!
