CENTRIPETAL FORCES are unifying forces that strengthen the State.
Examples:
1. National identity/ Nationalism
It instills national awareness, pride and loyalty. The raising of a national flag and singing of a national anthem  annually during the Super Bowl is an illustration of nationalism as a centripetal force.
2. Economy building
The State's unified efforts to grow a work force and develop an economy can be a stimulating force for citizens to bond together. First-class structures and facilities like the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City which started in 1870 but to this day hallmarks the superior economy of the US is an example of a centripetal force.
3. Culture identification
Language can be the most compelling force for citizens to have an overpowering sense of belongingness. English is most spoken language in the US, recognizing it as de facto national language as long as 5th century is an illustration of culture identification that unites a State.
CENTRIFUGAL FORCES are dividing forces that weaken the State
1. Political ideology
Differences in political beliefs can strongly divide a nation. The American politics is partisan. The rising of  two opposing parties in the 1790s is example of ideologies causing a division of State.
2. Economic ranks
Purchasing capacity, isolating the rich and poor has caused a split in the citizens of a State. Wealth inequality reported in 2014 wherein only 1% possess 40% of the nation's wealth, clearly depicts a great division between people with economic ranks.
3. Religion
Religion can unify but it can also be a powerful initiative for people to divide its nation. April 3, 2018's "Punish a Muslim Day" has caused an uproar. It evidently showed people identifying and separating themselves with religion.
POLITICAL FORCES have a greater impact on territoriality. It decides a sovereign state--  a defined area, a permanent population for the zone and enables the citizens to recognize property and attachment, defend it from violations and prosecute offences. It enforces control over a geographical area.
