The general form for Pythagoras' theorem is: a² + b² = c² (where c is the longest side).

You already have sides a and b, and to figure out c, you just have to substitute the numbers into the original equation and work it out step by step. Let's substitute a for 17 and b for 24:

a² + b² = c²

(17)² + (24)² = c²

289 + 576 = c²

865 = c²

Square root both sides to work out c:

√865 = √(c²)

c = √865 ≈ 29.41
