Prison colony

Oglethorpe proposed Georgia to become a colony for non-violent men in the overcrowded jails and prisons in England.

As England's jails and prisons were overflowing, Oglethorpe proposed the colony of Georgia be established as a place for those non-violent men to go. The colony would act as a buffer between Spanish Florida and the profitable colony of South Carolina. The colony would not have slavery and it would give men another chance to be successful and contributing members of society. The men would be given a piece of land and a chance to farm.
