Well there can be two different solutions for this but i will choose the easier one. Obviously one requires a system of equations which obviously will involve a lot of thinking and some good algebra solving in order for them to solve.
As for hit and trial it is very easy, we can just keep adding the distance as we know they are in different directions. 450 + 550 = 1000. So 1000 x 4 = 4000 miles. So after around 4 hours they will be 4000 miles apart if they continue at the same pace.
The plane will take 4 hours.
Linear system
It is a system of an equation in which the highest power of the variable is always 1. A one-dimension figure that has no width. It is a combination of infinite points side by side.
Speed
It is the ratio of distance to time. and is given by,
[tex]\rm Speed = \dfrac{distance}{time}[/tex]
Given
Two planes fly in opposite directions. one travels 450 mi/h and the other 550 mi/h.
To find
The time takes before they are 4,000 mi apart.
How to calculate?
We know the concept of relative speed, If speed is in opposite direction then it gets added up. then,
Speed = 450 + 550 = 1000
Then the time will be
[tex]\rm Speed = \rm \dfrac{distance}{time}\\\\\rm Time\ = \rm \dfrac{distance}{speed}\\\\Time\ = \dfrac{4000}{1000}\\\\Time\ = 4[/tex]
The plane will take 4 hours.
