Answer-
Jim has to work 48 hours to earn at least $300 per week.
Solution-
The amount Jim earns per hour = $8.50 and 26% of his pay is deducted for taxes.
Suppose he works x hours per week, so he will be earning in a week = 8.50x
Then, the amount he will pay for taxes = 26% of 8.50x = (0.26)(8.50)x
After tax deduction, the amount that he will be left with = 8.50x - (0.26)(8.50)x
And he has to work in order to get $300 per week after tax deduction,
So,
[tex]\Rightarrow 8.50x -(0.26)(8.50)x=300[/tex]
[tex]\Rightarrow (8.50- (0.26)(8.50))x =300[/tex]
[tex]\Rightarrow (8.50 -2.21)x =300[/tex]
[tex]\Rightarrow x=\frac{300}{6.29} =47.69 \approx48[/tex]
