This is caused by nondisjunction during meiosis causing the daughter cell to have more than two copies of chromosome 21. The disorder is characterized by stunted growth, mental impairment, low muscle tone among others. The disease used to be referred to as Mongolism because the characteristic of those affected shared physical trait characteristic with the Blumenbach's Mongolian race.
