For his long distance phone service, Sam pays a $6 monthly fee plus 6 cents per minute. Last month, Sam's long distance bill was $21.04 . For how many minutes was Sam billed?

Hello there!

So:

Write an equal sign on your paper. (=)

Now, there's a left and a right side.

On the left side, let's put the total there, and on the right side, we'll put everything else.

So what's the total amount spent? $21.04, right?

So put that on the left side.

21.04 =

Great! Now let's figure out the right side.

You know the monthly fee is $6. Since the $6 will never change, it's the constant. Since it's NOT the total, write it on the right side of your equal sign.

21.04 = 6

Fantastic! Now let's do the final step in making our equation!

"6 cents per minute," is an addition/add-on to the $6 constant, right?

So you're paying $6 as a constant, but you're ALSO paying 6 cents per minute. So the 6 cents would be adding on to the $6.

So it would be:

21.04 = 6+ 0.06

Right? Nope!

Notice how it was 6 cents PER MINUTE. Whenever you see a "per (unit)" you should add a variable!

So let's say 1 minute= m

So it would actually be:

21.04 = 6 + 0.06m

That's your equation!

P.S. It would be 0.06 and not 6 because 0.06 means 6 cents, whereas 6 means $6.

Now simply solve for m! (Or whichever variable you want).

Note that the equation can be

6 + 0.06m = 21.04

and still be correct! :)

I hope this helped!! :)
