It causes rocks that have metal in them to rust, making them weaker.

Answer:

Chemical weathering is a process in which the rocks are broken down into small particles, sediments with the effect of chemical agent like gases like oxygen, acids and alkalies. Oxidation is a chemical weathering process in which the rocks when exposed to air gets weathered. The oxygen present in the air oxidizes the elements present in the rocks. It weakens the bonds between the molecules of elements. This ultimately results in the weakening of the internal structure of the rocks, hence, weathering takes place. Rusting is a type of oxidation of iron. A layer of brownish red develops over the surface of iron, which weakens the overall structure. It results in weathering of iron containing rocks.
