East was to Hitler and they were most likely spared if they went to the enemy onstead of being caught in Germany with Hitler.

The Nazis fled west to surrender because if they surrendered to the Russians, they would not stand a chance at surviving. They figured that surrendering to the west would give them a chance at living.
