The word Porfiriato comes from the name "Porfirio", the first name of Porfirio Diaz - the President and de facto dictator of Mexico from 1884 to 1911. During this time he was re-elected president (sometimes through illegal means). Because he was the president for 30 years, many people spend a majority of their life under his rule, and it was an important period in Mexico's culture
