After reading the excerpt from "The Monkey's Paw," we can say that the mood in it is the following:

What is mood?
- We can define mood as the atmosphere created by an author in order to evoke certain feelings and emotions from his readers. To do so, diction, imagery, and setting are very useful.
What is the mood in the excerpt?
- The mood is immediately revealed by the words "horrible fear." However, even if the author did not use those words, we would be able to grasp the mood from the characters' actions and thoughts.
- Mr. White is drenched in cold sweat and so utterly disoriented that he misses the door. His wife too changes when he brings the magical paw with him.
- With all the information above in mind, we can easily choose letter A as the one that best describes the mood in the excerpt: terrified.
