In 1978 there were six aspiring astronauts at the Johnson Space Center in Huston. At the beginning the space veterans did not believe women would be ready to perform that role. So, to dispel such prejudices, they did as well or better than men. They were smart, tough, highly educated and meticulous. They met the challenge, they studied hard and they demostrated they were capable of doing it.
The women trainees removed doubts about their abilities by showing that they could do the same things that the men did at NASA.
Why did the women feel the need to prove that there were equally as good as their male counterparts?
The females in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) were treated with a condescending attitude. They were treated as though they were inferior inabilities.
To prove that they could do the job as well as the men, they attacked the gender prejudice by demonstrating that they could do the same things that the men did.
