I'd say it emphasizes the dreariness of life. It talks and makes you imagine a dark, cold, wet night, with rain falling down and leaves falling down.

It doesn't talk about anything happy or bright. It just lets you imagine a dark, rainy night, and that symbolizes dreariness, or more specifically, the dreariness in life.
