The author Simon Ortiz is a Native American who grew up in a traditional Acoma Indian society where the people depended much on the hands to work the lands for survival. The hands are needed to work the land, to hunt, to show affection.  The author remembers how his father showed him how to work the fields and to acknowledge the value of all living things.
