The three major Allied countries as of December, 1941, were:

  • Great Britain
  • The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR)
  • The United States of America (USA)

Great Britain had declared war on Germany in September, 1939, after Germany invaded Poland.  France was also an Ally with Britain against Germany, but France was quickly conquered by Germany and spent most of the war under German occupation.

The USSR joined the Allies against Germany after the Germans invaded Soviet territory in June, 1941.

The USA joined the Allies after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in December, 1941.  

Other countries that were part of the Allied Powers were Poland, China,  Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Belgium, and Greece.

In 1940, Germany, Italy and Japan had signed the Tripartite Pact, and as a group they became known as the Axis Powers.  Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania were also aligned with the Axis Powers.

World War II was a battle between the Axis Powers and Allied Powers.

People often unite especially countries to countries. The three key Allied countries are:
