Respuesta :
In the Puritan colonies the right to vote was limited to the members of the church and the salaries of the ministers were paid from the taxes. The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1763, granted Great Britain rights over Canada and all of North America east of the Mississippi River. The victory of England led directly to the conflict with its American colonies. To prevent them from fighting with the natives of the region, called Indians by the Europeans, a royal Proclamation of 1763 denied the settlers the right to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British government began to punish the smugglers and imposed new taxes on sugar, coffee, textiles and other imported goods. The Housing Act forced the colonies to house and feed the British soldiers; and with the approval of the Stamp Act, special tax stamps must be affixed to all newspapers, brochures, legal documents and licenses.
- Many settlers considered that the coercive laws were a violation of the British Constitution
- The settlers claimed that the laws imposed by the empire meant a threat to the freedoms of all British America.
- The assembly of Philadelphia organized a boycott of British goods and requested the king to annul the coercive laws
- Although many settlers no longer believed that Parliament had sovereignty over them, they still professed loyalty to George III and hoped that he would intercede on their behalf.
- The second Congress of Philadelphia sent this petition when it was clear that the colonies could not declare their loyalty to the monarch and at the same time refuse to obey it because among the representatives of the colonies the predominant idea was that they were fighting against a very conservative parliamentary sector that he opposed the old liberties of the colonies
- The settlers hoped to have the right to have representatives in the English Parliament
