Transpiration is the loss of water in the leaves. Because of cohesion (sticking to other water molecules), the water that is lost essentially "pulls" more water behind it, which pulls water up through the xylem of the plant. Adhesion (water molecules sticking to other molecules) helps attach the water to the walls of the xylem, preventing it from sliding back down the plant.
