Figuring to the nearest 100 miles, how far would cotton goods have to travel to get from Tulum to Bonampak? How much of this journey would be by sea? By land?

I also struggled with this question and I'm not 100% sure about my answer, but it's better than no answer. I used the little scale thing on the bottom right corner of the map. And I found out that by sea it was around 700 miles. And by land, I got around 350, but I rounded up to 400. Hopefully I was able to help... this stuff can be hard. I hate DBQ packets, but you gotta do your best.

Explanation:

This explanation requires maps to support the numbers, so, first of all, here you have a gray map of Mayan trade routes. Here you can see Tulum which is at the top right corner of the map close to the Caribean Sea. Bonampak is closer to the center of the map. There is a direct path from Tulum to Bonampak and it is through a sea route surrounding Yucatán Peninsula  and then continuing by land on an almost straight route to Bonampak. With the help of Google Maps we can measure the approximate distance of the combined sea and land routes and these are the resuts:

  • Sea route: 1000 km  approx.
  • Land route: 208.31 km approx
  • Total route: 1208.31 km  which is equal to 750.81 miles
