Napoleon Bonaparte was given command of the Army of Italy, and originally faced two armies, one Austrian and one from Piedmont. He attacked quickly and managed to force Piedmont to leave the war. After this military success, Napoleon took Milan, where he established a republican government. His campaign in Italy helped end the French Revolutionary Wars in favor of France, and also, established Napoleon as an important political figure.
