The Earth's axis of rotation is tilted. Because of this, the amount of sunlight a point on the surface receives each day varies depending on the time of year. These variations result in four distinct seasons.

The diagrams below show the Earth at four different points in its yearly revolution around the Sun. Which of the below positions will result in maximum daylight hours and the warmest temperatures for the Northern Hemisphere?

The only reason you can't look at the diagrams and answer this on your own is because the drawings are so crummy, and they don't really show you what's going on.  Why, they don't even have letters or numbers with them so you can say which one you're talking about !

The upper drawing on the left-hand side of the page shows the northern hemisphere tilted toward the sun.  When the Earth's axis is in this position, the sun shines more directly down on the northern half, and plus, the northern half spends more hours in daylight.  In this position, the northern hemisphere has the longest, warmest days.  This is the diagram you want.

The position in the first picture will result in longer and warmer days because the northern hemisphere is closer to the sun than that of the southern hemisphere.

Seasons on the Earth:

  • It depends upon the position of the earth relative to the sun. The earth is tilted 23.5° hence the different parts of the earth get a different amount of light.
  • When the northern hemisphere is closer to the sun, due to the inclined axis of the earth, the season becomes summer.
  • In summer, the Northern hemisphere gets direct sunlight for a long period of time in the day.

SInce in the 1st picture northern hemisphere is closer to the sun than that of the southern hemisphere,

Therefore, the position in the first picture will result in longer and warmer days.
