Norway was a country that was neutral in both of the World Wars, as the country did not saw any interest or reason to engage into war nor it had any big sympathies for either side, Norway decided to not choose side in the war.
Unfortunately for the Norwegians, Germany didn't cared about their neutrality and they saw it as a territory that has much needed natural resources as well as excellent strategic location. The Germans attacked Norway, and with inside help they managed to invade their territory, with lot of destruction and life losses on the Norwegian side.
This shocked the world, including the United States, because a neutral country was not supposed to be attacked as it had nothing to do with the war, so it quickly was reported in the newspapers as a front page news.
