It instilled a fear of communism in American citizens. To this day, Americans reject any form of government that isn't democracy. Socialism is seen as a bad thing due to its associations with communism. The Cold War also made Russia the enemy of the United States and there is a strong bias and many stereotypes against Russians among Americans.
