The answer to number one is because they wanted to stop the spread of communist propaganda. The answer for number two is they would lose their jobs, separated from the community, abused verbally and physically, shunned, lost friends, and even family members.

1. They did not want any communist propaganda.

2. They would not have the right to move around freely, and they would be abused.
