Photosynthesis is the process by which green plant make their own food using energy from the sun.
Photosynthesis occurs in two stages, that is, light dependent reactions and light independent reactions.
During light dependent reactions the energy from the sunlight is absorbed by the chlorophyll pigments and used to break down water molecules into oxygen atoms and hydrogen ions, a process called photolysis.
Oxygen produced may be released in the atmosphere or used for respiration while the hydrogen ions are taken to the light independent reactions.
