Though it was founded by France, the Native Americans were the first inhabitants of New Orleans. During the initial French discovery, the city was destroyed by the hurricane and rebuilding resulted in French Architecture that stands to this date.
The French ceded New Orleans to Spain and for 40 years it was under the Spanish leadership that left the cathedral building that still in existence even today.
It was later ceded back to the French people who sold it to the United States 20 days later.
During the 18th and half of 19th century, it was the largest wealthiest city in the US dealing in the slave trade, involved in the production, trading with the South America, Caribbean, and Europe.
