Benedict Arnold was born in 1741. He was best known as an American hero in the Revolutionary War. After first being known as a hero, Benedict Arnold then became an infamous traitor. He first fought for the United States, but then he switched sides and Arnold fought for the British.

Arnold then participated in the British invasion of New York, specifically at the Battle of Lake Champlain. Arnold also played a crucial role in the surrender of the British General John Burgoyne’s army. This happened in Saratoga. Arnold did a lot of big things for the Americans but he felt like he did not get the recognition that he thought he was supposed to get.

He then switched sides and got into a secret negotiation with the British in 1779. Arnold agreed to turn over the United States post at West Point. In return, Arnold would get money and a company in the British army.

His betrayal was then discovered, but he succeeded to escape to the British lines. After then, Arnold was known as the infamous traitor in US history. His name has even become the synonym of the word “traitor” itself. Therefore, Arnold’s betrayal was shocking for the Continental troops because he was first known as a successful general in the US army.
