"Destiny"—A Public Service Announcement Young Girl 1: At 12, I smoked my first cigarette. Young Boy 1: At 15, I was addicted. Teen Girl 2: By 40, I'll have lung disease. Teen Boy 2: At 50, I'll have a heart attack. Dr. Benjamin: Cigarette smoke causes immediate damage that leads to health problems, even death. Those who quit or die are being replaced by a new generation of smokers. Today, more than 600,000 middle school students and 3 million high school students smoke cigarettes. Every day, more than 1,200 people in this country die due to smoking. For each of those deaths, at least two youth or young adults become regular smokers each day. Almost 90% of those replacement smokers smoke their first cigarette by age 18. Youth are vulnerable to social and environmental influences to use tobacco; messages and images that make tobacco use appealing to them are everywhere. I'm Dr. Regina Benjamin, United States Surgeon General. Go to cdc.com. Learn how to make our next generation tobacco free.
