Who was Sin Yunbok?
Joseon Dynasty Korean painter Shin Yun-bok (1758–1813), also recognized by his pen name Hyewon, was from that area. He is renowned for his realistic portrayals of everyday life in his day, much like his contemporaries Danwon and Geungjae. His considerably more erotic genre paintings than Danwon's were a factor in his departure from the royal paintings institution, Dohwaseo. In the Joseon era, painting was typically a hereditary industry; Hyewon's grandfather and father had both worked as palace painters. Hyewon is renowned as one of the "Triple Wons" of Joseon-period painting, along with Danwon and the later painters Owon.
Even without being inspired and dominated by Kim Hong-do throughout his career, Shin Yun-bok developed his own special style and craftsmanship. He parallels Kim Hong-Do in that he is most renowned for his Joseon-era genre paintings. Shin's paintings of townsfolk and gisaeng contained hints of s-exuality whereas Kim's peasant depictions were delightfully done. He used vivid colors and exquisite paint strokes, which set his characters apart from Kim's, as well as a different composition and painting style. In fact, he produced scenes of shamanic and town life that provide insight into the way of life and attire of the late Joseon period.
