The Venetians were particularly skilled at trade, and this allowed Venice to become a very wealthy and powerful city-state during this time period. This power allowed Venice to offer protection to the Byzantine empire. The empire accepted and in exchange, offered many benefits to Venetians when it came to trade. This, however, ultimately contributed to the downfall of the empire. Because of this dependence, the empire became unable to defend itself. Moreover, the trade proved to be one-sided, making it difficult for the empire to benefit from it.

The Venetians and the Byzantine's had a trade pact initially that gave the Venetians trade concessions if they helped the Byzantine's fight their enemies.

Venice never fulfilled its promise to help the Byzantine's fight their enemies even after benefitting from trade. Instead they reaped trade benefits from the pact signed while the Byzantine's went on a decline.
