An example of an active shape would be a 3D shape. Whether it be an actual object, or a visualized drawing. An example on paper is a circle, but this isn’t just any ordinary circle; it’s 3D looking but not actually 3D. What makes it look active and realistic are the details added to it, such as shading. I recommend you look at the 7 Elements of Art.
