The reasons for a mass extinction can be numerous, varying from massive volcanic eruptions, space objects impacts, or sharp changes in the global climate. When the organisms don't have enough time or are not able to adapt to the newly created living conditions they die out. This opens up a big gap, which is later filled by the species that have survived.

  • From the geological evidence, we can see that there have been several mass extinctions on the planet, where the fossil records of most of the species just stop occurring.
  • Some species though, usually smaller and less evolved, that managed to survive continue to appear in the fossil records, even after the mass extinction.
  • Gradually, it can be noticed in the fossil records that the small surviving species are changing, becoming more complex, larger, and more specialized.
  • This is a great supportive evidence for the theory of evolution.
