Due to lack of vegetation, the moisture in the ground is also easily lost to the atmosphere by evaporation leaving the place even drier.  Vegetation also adds organic matter to the soil where humus forms. Smaller soil particles get tightly aggregated into larger soil particles that are not easily carried by agent of erosion.
