What two fundamental characteristics reflect (k). What occurs if/when a population exceeds carrying capacity (k). Explain why there is a lag time between the overshoot of carrying capacity and the population dieback.

Answer:

Carry capacity (K), the theoretical population an area can hold is characterized by the population's steep rise and then, over time, the population growth slows down and begins to level off. This creates the S shape. If a population exceeds carrying capacity it will typically begin to decline. This occurs due to resources being unavailable, such as food. Either the death rate will increase or the birth rate will decrease. The population might have exceeded the carrying capacity but it doesn’t use the resources straight away this is why it may take time for the population dieback to occur.
