A horse canters away from its trainer in a straight line, moving 126 m away in 13.0 s. It then turns abruptly and gallops halfway back in 5.0 s .Calculate: (a) its average speed? (b) its average velocity for the entire trip, using "away from the trainer" as the positive direction.

Respuesta :

Answer.

given,

distance moved, d = 126 m

time = 13 s

then turns abruptly and gallops halfway back in 5.0 s .

a) Average speed = ?

   total distance = 126 m + 62 m

                          = 189 m

   total time = 13 + 5 = 18 s

[tex]average\ speed = \dfrac{total\ distance}{total\ time}[/tex]

[tex]average\ speed = \dfrac{189}{18}[/tex]

[tex]average\ speed = 10.5 m/s[/tex]

b) average velocity of the entire trip

  total displacement = 126 - 62 = 62 m

   total time = 18 s

  [tex]average\ velocity = \dfrac{total\ displacement}{total\ time}[/tex]

  [tex]average\ velocity = \dfrac{62}{18}[/tex]

  [tex]average\ velocity = 3.44\ m/s[/tex]
