The paragraph below comes from a 1979 essay by expatriate African American writer James Baldwin. Read the paragraph carefully and then write an essay that defends, challenges, or qualifies Baldwin's ideas about the importance of language as a "key to identity" and to social acceptance. Use specific examples from your observation, experience, or reading to develop your position.

"It goes without saying, then, that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power. It is the most vivid and crucial key to identity: It reveals the private identity, and connects one with, or divorces one from, the larger, public, or communal identity. There have been, and are, times, and places, when to speak a certain language could be dangerous, even fatal. Or, one may speak the same language, but in such a way that one's antecedents are revealed, or (one hopes) hidden. This is true in France, and is absolutely true in England: The range (and reign) of accents on that damp little island make England coherent for the English and totally incomprehensible for everyone else. To open your mouth in England is (if I may use black English) to 'put you business on the street': You have confessed your parents, your youth, your school, your salary, your self-esteem, and, alas, your future."

Defending James Baldwin ideas

Explanation:  Language is the key to identity and social acceptance

According to the American writer James Baldwin the idea that language is important to identity and social acceptance .I agree with the writer as we all know that we have no value without knowing and speaking language of that particular region where we go. Without knowing a language neither u have identity nor a social acceptance.

The world is progressing at its peak and English language is getting international identification to the very peak. People who need to go abroad, and even in their own country are required to have a language proficiency and thus are most of the times required to apply a language test .we can have a look at the IELTS and Toffel, the OET which are simply language tests, and every student, every employ is worried about them. These tests are getting popular and having a high business. Now why are these tests required, just for business, obviously no! These test are a requirement and basic employment and study won’t be offered without passing them with a high band.

If I go England, for instance without knowing, a single word of English, I would be socially isolated. I would have no friends, even though if I am having some neighbors, what’s the use I won’t be able to interact them. If I speak my language, for example Urdu, I would be known to be Pakistani or Urdu speaker and that is my identity.

Language is a standard set for interaction in office, community country or even at home. An introduction isn’t possible without the words, even a names we have are derived from certain language. A husband wife even need to learn the same language to stay together happily or there won’t be any conversation at all .Without a language the world would be deaf and dumb and hence animals would accompany us.

A quarrel can be resolved, a friend be talked, a teachers lecture, or interacting the client, whether you stay in your country or go abroad , either it’s a fight or friendship, a hate speech or love letter , all require the basic fuel which is language. So all in all yeah language is the key to identity and social acceptance.
