the law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but it transforms from one form to another.
this also applies in a food chain, for energy is decreased by 90% when moving down to the next animal (or trophic level), but it is not created nor destroyed, for the first source of energy in a food chain is always the sun, and the sun is an infinite source of energy

Producers are the basis of all food chains because they produce food not only for themselves, but also for all other organisms. When consumers eat producers and other consumers, energy is passed up the food chain. However, with each additional link in the food chain, energy is always lost. According to the law of conservation of energy, though, this "lost” energy does not disappear; it only changes form.
